This past Thursday night Chromeo came to Vancouver to funk up the Commodore. To be honest, I was pretty excited. However, the show in general wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either.

Here’s why: my stupid gay husband’s disc jockey. Since when does an opener get to rock a hour and a half set?? Know your place opening bands/DJs/performers. It was just him, in the corner, with his gear and a mandatory Apple laptop, lovin’ himself. Unfortunately, amidst the crap he was outputting, he was murdering classic Nirvana and AC/DC songs. I wanted to get up on stage and close his silly macbook and just say “you’re done.” Furthermore, he kept saying these stupid little comments: “is it 11 already? sorry i’m raving away here” and “chromeo will be comin up soon guys!” and he’ll then continue to play for another 30 minutes. I was gunna spazz. I was losin’ it. Had to get another beer.

Anyways, on to the good: when Chromeo finally came on they were awesome. And thankfully they knew it was time and didn’t waste a moment getting onto stage. They were awesome though – did I already say that? Chromeo are just two dudes but they have a good stage presence. I respect what they’re doing too because they lay down the singing and funky guitar busts and all that stuff live, whereas they could just hit the play button and dance, milli-vanilli style. For some parts I thought they could play a little more but P-Thugg’s talkbox with his keys against Dave-1′s geetar solos was toyt.

And they would switch up instruments with ease to (with both guys playing bass when they needed too). Dave-1′s guitar was super nice too. Classic black Les Paul. Solid. They didn’t play too long but that seems to be their style after looking at some setlists on the net. What I really enjoyed seeing is that it looked like they were having a good time. Dave-1 was smiling while bustin the licks and that’s cool when an artist is loving the show and showing it too — not being all super serious like Eddie Vedder does (hah — had to get that one in there Na). The setlist was good… kept the crowd going… surprising to see crowd surfing but that’s cool.

They played all the hits but could’ve thrown in a few more tunes. They ended the night with “100%” which is a good song but I thought they’d end it a little more explosively (100% is pretty relaxed for them).

So, to summarize:
My gay DJ – no good
Chromeo – awesome
