Not Volunteering is Illegal According to the Liberal Government

Apparently choosing not to do volunteer/ extra curricular work is illegal now according to the government.

I am not sure why they are choosing this course of action.

BC is turning more and more into a fascist state. The government is abusing its powers to control unionized workers and it’s all because we don’t fund their campaigns. Please don’t think that it is more complicated than that.

If teachers funded political campaigns like business’s, than there wouldn’t be a 40% cut in public education over the last 9 years and coincidentally private school has seen their funding increase 35% during the same time.

If there was a photo op, then maybe Christy Clark would change her mind. But I wouldn’t bet on that. After all she was the one who legislated teachers back to work in the early 2000′s and thus started the erosion of the public system at the hands of the Liberals.

Just saying is all…

Here is a blog from the Vancouver Sun.

A protest that has resulted in teachers withdrawing from all after-hours activities in B.C. public schools amounts to an illegal strike, the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) alleges.

On Wednesday, it filed an application to the B.C. Labour Relations Board (LRB) seeking an order that would end the B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) protest and require teachers to resume all such activities.

The crux of the issue appears to be the definition of extracurricular. The BCPSEA says it is not trying to force individual teachers to coach sports teams, for example, but does not accept the union’s broad definition of what constitutes voluntary activities.

“The BCTF has directed its members to withdraw a very broad range of duties that teachers typically perform as part of their teaching job, based upon the fact that those duties are typically performed either before or after the school bell rings,” the association says in a statement. Those activities include parent-teacher interviews, student tutorials, writing reports and talking to principals.

“The BCTF’s call for service withdrawal captures both duties that are clearly and expressly required of all teachers and duties that are performed by some teachers at those teachers’ option.

“In our view, the BCTF’s direction to its members to engage in a concerted refusal to perform these duties constitutes an illegal strike in violation of the Labour Relations Code and the Act,” the association states.

The application was filed one day after BCTF president Susan Lambert sent a letter to members appealing for solidarity as school events are being cancelled or re-scheduled.

“For this part of the Action Plan to be effective, and to ensure that it can be sustained until the end of June, we need to be united and strong around the province,” she wrote. “It takes extraordinary courage for members to make these decisions, and we must support them and each other through this Action Plan.”

She also said the union provided a cut-and-dried definition of extracurricular activities to ensure consistency around the province.

The union has also announced that it is going to B.C. Supreme Court to fight the appointment of Charles Jago as mediator in the contract feud. It had applied to the LRB to have him removed because of a perception of bias, but the board said it lacked jurisdiction. Given the length of time it takes for courts to rule, it’s safe to say Jago will have finished his work before a decision is rendered. He has a June 30 deadline to reach a deal or submit non-binding recommendations to government – and no one expects this to end well.

Jago once described his task as Mission Impossible and I doubt he’s changed his view.

The LRB has set a case management meeting for Friday; no word yet on when a hearing might occur.

RIP MCA

I was sad to hear that Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch had passed away last week. I didnt really get into hip hop until after listening to the Beastie Boys. When I think of them, I think of Sabotage! Great music video!!!

After when he created the Tibetan Freedom Concerts, it helped me begin to see music and musician as a voice of change. Plus it didn’t hurt that they had stellar lineups!!!

and here is a different type of cover of (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right by Coldplay.

Lionel Messi Record Breaker

Did anyone else notice that Lionel Messi, who plays for FC Barcelona, has completely shattered the mark for goals in a season in any top flight league around the world. I am pretty sure that he hit is 75th goal in all completitions. That is completely insane and kinda unbelievable. When people tell stories of the year Messi hit 75+, people will think you are exaggerating!

New Soundgarden album in the fall?

Chris Cornell estimates that Soundgarden’s forthcoming studio album, their first with new material since 1996′s Down on the Upside, was 75 percent done when the recently-reunited Seattle grunge heroes were first asked to help contribute to the soundtrack for Joss Whedon’s new superhero film, The Avengers. “It was the last song that was written,” Cornell tells Rolling Stone of “Live to Rise,” the soundtrack’s opener, which is available for free download on iTunes, and the first new Soundgarden song to be released in 15 years.

Cornell says Soundgarden’s yet-to-be-titled album will be mastered in a week’s time so, in his mind, “it’s done. It’ll be out in probably October,” he says. “I would say September but I’m just guessing October. We’re pretty much done with everything.” “Live to Rise,” a riff-heavy rocker, while not necessarily representative of the entire album’s sound, the singer says, would “work just fine on it.”

When the band was initially approached with the idea to contribute to the Avengers soundtrack, Cornell says his natural instinct was to use a song from the new album’s recording sessions. “The first thought was, ‘Let’s take one of our songs,’” he says. “That thought lasted about three minutes. I didn’t believe that we had anything that was gonna really work. But it did seem like it would be a cool challenge to try and write [a new song].”

The idea of writing a custom track, however, was simpler in theory than in execution. “I went through a lot of different ideas that I scrapped – probably more than usual,” Cornell says of the laborious process of writing “Live to Rise.” “Soundgarden does a lot of time signature changes and shifts and things like that. It felt like this should be a little more straightforward ’cause it’s for a broad audience. The idea of having it be intelligent lyrically and melodic and all these things – it’s a task to do all that stuff. Once I got started I wanted it to be right. But maybe that’s more of a ‘Chris being OCD’ thing.”

A band linking up with a blockbuster movie, Cornell says, is as clear a sign as any of the “new landscape.” “[Licensing songs] has become kind of the cheap way that bands with any version of credibility have to get their songs out in front of people,” he explains. “It used to be absolutely the forbidden fruit for any band – if you put your song in a commercial you were screwed. I’ve never felt like that was a no-no.” But Cornell recognizes that certain sacrifices must be made in today’s new age of music; he recalls having to record five live acoustic tracks for his latest solo album, Songbook, just so Wal-Mart would stock it. “It’s not even a matter of like, ‘Do it so they’ll put it near the front of the store,’ like it might have been 10 years ago,” he says. “It’s, ‘Do it so they’ll carry it.’”

Cornell does take solace in the fact that The Avengers is a film that he and Soundgarden respect and enjoy. “For a band like Soundgarden, being associated with [The Avengers] – for what it’s about and what they accomplish in it – it’s a pretty good way to have a partner in the entertainment business to get your songs out in front of people,” he says. “The record companies don’t have that any more. They don’t have the money. They don’t have the resources. They can’t do it. They won’t do it. Not gonna happen.”

Eric Hassli with a HUGE goal

We went to the Whitecpas game last night and it was a great game. The crowd was dead a little in the first half but did woke up once the game was in full action.

But everyone went crazy when Hassli scored in the last minute of extra time to seal the deal. Nothing better than screaming the Hassli chant knowing that his goal secured the win for the Caps over the best in the west, San Jose.
